Have a ball for a good cause: The 13th annual Cops and Kids charity basketball game will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in the gym of Gurrie Middle School in La Grange. This year’s event will benefit the Cari Lyn Cook Family Memorial Fund.

Bad PR: Brookfield Zoo was included on a list of the 2009 Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants put together by the Defense of Animals group. Two elephants have died in the zoo in the past year. It looks like zoo officials have a blemished reputation to repair.

Environmental group honored: The Brookfield Conservation Commission was recently honored with the 2009 Conservation Native Landscaping Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Chicago Wilderness for its work with the Brookfield Oak Savanna at Kiwanis Park.

Provide the details: It’s commendable that the idea of creating a safety commission in has been reintroduced, given the death last year of Countryside resident Cari Cook. But questions remain about what the duties of such a group would be, and these need to be defined.

Cops and Kids Charity Basketball Game to be held Feb. 18

La Grange Park, IL — The 13th Annual Cops and Kids Charity Basketball Game will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Gurrie Middle School gymnasium, 1001 Spring Ave., La Grange.

Police officers from the Countryside, Hodgkins and La Grange police departments will complete to raise funds for the Cari Lyn Cook Family Memorial Fund.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

A raffle will be held and snacks will be available.
