Illinois Department of Transportation officials have announced the speed limit on 47th Street will be lowered from 35 to 30 mph between Gilbert and East Eberly avenues.

The new speed limit is expected to be put into effect in the next few weeks, according to a release from the offices of state Rep. James Durkin, R-82nd District, of Western Springs.

The decision to lower the limit comes on the heels of a state speed study conducted on 47th Street, a state-controlled road way.

Pedestrian safety has been an issue on the busy four-lane road since the death of Countryside resident Cari Cook May. 19. Cook was struck and killed by a vehicle as she attempted to lift a stroller containing her two-year-old daughter over the curb.

Her four month-old son, strapped in a carrier on her chest, suffered a fractured leg. The girl was unharmed.

The driver, Mary McPhillips, 45, of Chicago, pleaded guilty for failure to exercise due care for a pedestrian and improper lane usage in Cook County Circuit Court in Bridgeview Aug. 3. She paid traffic fines for the citations issued after a police investigation.
