The Village of La Grange is pleased to announce that the enhanced pedestrian crossing on 47th Street at 9th Avenue is operational. The enhancements to this crossing are part of the Village's strategy of evaluating and improving pedestrian safety throughout the Village. The improvements to this crossing include the posting of additional advanced warning signage, installing advanced warning pavement markings and installing pedestrian activated post mounted beacons and in-pavement flashers to alert motorists of pedestrian activity at this location.

When crossing at the newly installed pedestrian crosswalk at 47th Street and 9th Avenue, please adhere to the following recommendations:

1. Push the activation button located on the sign post to initiate the pedestrian signal.
2. Once pushed the lights will flash for 30 seconds.
3. Wait for vehicles to stop before starting to cross.
4. Cross carefully. Walk smartly.

While these improvements are intended to increase the safety of pedestrians crossing the roadway, pedestrians should be aware that good judgment when crossing a roadway is very important. Even though Illinois law requires vehicles to yield to pedestrians within a crosswalk, pedestrians should still be on the defensive since there remains a chance that motorists may not see the pedestrian crossing.

If you have any questions or comments concerning pedestrian safety please contact Ryan Gillingham, Director of Public Works at (708) 579-2328 or Mike Holub, Police Chief at (708) 579-2333.
